Unit 3 & 4: The Dumb Waiter, Silent Movie and Clash Of Concerts
Unit 3:
The Dumb Waiter
Introduction To This Unit
For this Unit our class will be focusing on a play called The Dumb Waiter written by Harold Pinter. We will also be producing our own Silent Movies.
Context
In our first lesson back from half term we looked over a script called The Dumb. The Dumb Waiter is a play based on two characters called Ben and Gus who are set in the basement of an old rooming house connected to the rooms above by a dumbwaiter and an intercom. The whole class sat in a circle in the middle of the room and some people took it in turns to read as either 'Ben' or 'Gus'.
The next day we had our lesson in the dance studio which gave us a chance to really use the space around us and work on our "mime techniques". Firstly, we started off with standing in neutral position (both our legs shoulder width apart) in a circle. We then started off with a warm up activity where we needed count the three people down from you to your right (not including yourself) and whatever action they do you would have to copy that exact same action. The number one rule is that no one is in charge. For the next activity we had to imagine that we were holding an imaginary metal rod in our hands that was really heavy. We had to remember to use facial expressions and not look relaxed since the rod we were holding is heavy. We could change the position of our hands such as our left hand on top and our right hand at the bottom. We also changed the position the rod was in such as having it vertically and horizontally whilst moving around the room with it.
After doing more work on our silent movies, we got the chance to focus more on our Dumb Waiter scripts.
We started off in our usual circle and done some warm ups. We played a quick game of tag and wink murder.
We each rehearsed over our Dumb Waiter scenes.
To mix up our dumb waiter rehearsals Rob asked the class for different movie genres that we watched. Rob then wrote down the different movie genres we told him which were:

In our last lesson of the day we got the chance to watch some silent movies to help us with our own silent movies and to to help better and add to our Dumb Waiter performances.
Some silent movies we watched were with dialogue and others were without dialogue. It was interesting to watch both these videos as it gives me inspiration and new ideas as to what I can add in and improve in my future performances such as the different facial expressions that I use and my movements during my performances.

THE DAY OF MY DUMB WAITER PERFORMANCE!
Silent Movies
(A planned and directed unit by Rob)
Introduction To Our Silent Movie
Context
We got into pairs which had to be with someone we hadn't really worked with before. In our pairs we had to come up with different scenes where either we had to 'paint a wall' or be 'putting up wallpaper' in both of these scenarios something had to of gone wrong such as a bucket of paint being spilt over. While working on these with our patterns we had to mime our scenes as well as during our performances.
Since my partner and I were the only pair for our performance, Rob helped us develop our silent movie piece which turned out to be great and funny. We continuously practised as well as getting feedback from Rob which helped better our performance.
In the same partners as we were for the Dumb Waiter we were given 20 minutes and had to come up with a 1 minute scenario were something went horribly wrong . The scenario my partner and I came up with was where we are two siblings fighting over who turn it is to watch the TV. I found this really fun to act out because it gave me the chance to be silly and be myself and this is something that happens often at my house. We got feedback from Rob and built on our short film and also tried acting it out with and without dialogue.

Planning
Our last lesson of the day which was acting, Rob gave us the whole lesson to develop our silent movies in pairs. My partner and I decided to create a silent movies where I was the annoyed cleaner and My partner was the obnoxious and rude rich man who ended up having the roles reversed on him and he now worked for me. We were given props to use to help us with our short movies. We went into the filming room where we could either use the green screen or another set with had a living room layout. My partner and I decided to set our scene in the living room.
Research and References
In our last lesson we watched some silent movies to help us with our own silent movies we were to create later on. Some silent movies we watched were with dialogue and others were without dialogue. It was interesting to watch both as it gives me inspiration, confidence and new ideas as to what I can add in and improve in my future performances such as the different facial expressions that I use and my movements during performances.
Evaluation (for silent Movie)
Today is when my partner and I went into the film room to record our movies on camera. I had a lot of fun recording my partner's and I's silent movie. We improved a lot of things which turned out to be really great and funny. I was a bit worried and nervous to be filming a silent movie since there wouldn't be any dialogue in it only movement but, in the end it turned out to be a great experience for me to have and use in the future.
In my opinion I found making my silent movie interesting, weird and funny. Obviously since it's a silent movie there's no talking and that's what makes this so interesting and challenging. I always enjoy trying new things and this was one of them. This type of performing is new for me and I would love to make more silent movies in the future and hope that the skills I've learnt and developed during this production, will stay with me throughout my course as I can use it to better my acting and experiences.
Unit 4:
Clash Of Concerts
Introduction To This Unit
For unit 4 we will be working in groups, creating our own posters and stages for live concerts based on artists that we've chosen.
Context&Planning
In our lessons with Rebecca we've been deciding in our groups which pop star to research on. My group have decided to do Eminem. Each of the groups were given one computer to find a picture of the chosen singer/rapper and create a teaser poster as if you were advertising a future performance. We were given about 45 minutes to do this activity. Once the time was up each of the groups had to go to another groups table and judge their poster and write what was good, what was bad about it and what they can improve on.
We were given a presentation of last years posters of different pop starts that other students chose, for example, Rihanna, Demi Lavato etc. we gave some feedback on the posters and rated them. I found this helpful as it gave me an idea of what I could do for my individual poster and group poster. Once the presentation was finished Rebecca announced that for this lesson we were to find a picture of the same pop star we chose before and create a teaser poster however, it was as individuals which I didn't mind since it would give the chance to be creative and really use my imagination.
We had some class discussions on the types of information we needed to include into our advertisement posters and so it also looks appeasing.
Research and References
As soon as we entered the classroom we sat down in our groups according to which artist we chose to research. Rebecca showed us different examples of different set designs that were made by other students, artists etc. In our groups we then talked about ideas we could use to help create our own set design and also watched live performances on our phones of our own artists to get an idea of what design they would have.
In our group we began researching mini stages to get an idea of what our stage would look similar to, what props we will need amongst other things for our stage production. We went onto Amazon and looked up different props that we might need to be included in our production and also to be aware of their sizes since our stages can only be mini.
Some of us in our group drew rough sketches of what our stage would look like, where each of the props would be, who the special guests are gonna be, where the DJ would be standing and most importantly where Eminem would be etc.
We also watched more videos of Eminem's old live performances and music videos with other artists to help us get an idea of what we would need to include in order to give our audience a great Eminem experience.
Planning

The first two photos on the left the list of different props that we needed in order to complete our set design for our lie concert.
Each of the groups were given a small box that we had to use as a stage for our production.
We were given different equipment such as sugar paper, glue, scissors, glitter etc. in order to help make our production stand out.
We had to cover the whole stage in black sugar paper but were allowed to add anything else that we wanted by our choice so that our production didn't look too boring and simple. We also had to keep in consideration of what our artists would usually design their stage with.
Problem Solving
A problem that occurred in our group was that we had a few countries to chose from to decide where we're going to have the concert happen. Some people wanted it to be in Albania others wanted in it America. In the end we came up with a scenario and got a hat and some paper. We wrote down different countries on the pieces of paper and put them into the hat and shuffled them around to make it a fair choice, and Albania was chosen.
Mandy's lesson
As soon as we got into class we were put into groups and each group was given a piece of paper that had a princess story on it such as Snow White, Cinderella, the little mermaid etc. and had to create our own scenes based on the main parts of the story. Once our time was up each group performed in front of the class and the class had to guess which fairy tail it was.
We then moved onto creating our own scenarios of anything we wanted.
When we got into class we all sat down in a circle and had to check our pulse to feel how many beats we got within 60 seconds.
We then moved onto doing an exercise of which consisted of Punching, throwing our arms in a half circular motion, high knee kicking the air, high kicking the air and then running from one spot to another. Once we finished this activity we then had to re check our pulse to see whether or not it changed and got lower or higher.
This is my individual Eminem Tour poster that I done.
Evaluation
Even though we didn't get to finish this unit, it helped me develop some skills such as team work, Imagination, creativity and communication. During this unit I got a chance to work on my creative side. I enjoyed making my individual Eminem poster and thought I did well on it.
